  1. Hi Bob Jonathan from Trinidad jus getting into aluminum welding can u do a video showing hw to set up a machine for basic lap joints it to joint aluminum 1/8 inch thick material?

  2. Bob, another great video from the "school of hard knocks (experience)". You can dial your machine all over the place, or you can manipulate your arc length and weld pool. I have found that both can give a good result, however, I am a fan/student of what I call "pool management". settings are settings, but if you know how to manipulate your arc length and what it does to the weld pool, you can produce some very good results, regardless of the machine you are running……………..it all boils down to how much effort you have to put into it. Great tips and solid counsel…..IMHO

  4. Another informative video, Thank you. I do a lot of structural repairs on heavy machinery. I was always instructed to peen my welds to help re leave the stress . I have been told that a needle scalier will also re leave stress. I there a way to test these theory's out, it might make a good video!

  5. Hey! Gotta ? ! Has nothing to do with pipe welding, but maybe you or someone else in you tube land on weld.com can help me. Can you plug in a plasma cutting torch cable to a titanium unlimited 200 multiprocess welder and use it as a plasma cutter? Just askin.

  6. I have an aluminum boat where the back part where the motor is mounted is cracked and bent from someone hauling it with the motor down. Would I be better welding or brazing?

  7. Bob was one of my better students. He was able to tell the difference between a work lead and torch, and an earth lead and a clamp.
Though it took a while to figure out that you can't plug a machine into the power supply, using the earth lead.

  8. I like the beginners vids of late. One thing i hope you'll cover sometime is basics for vertical stick welding (preferably AC). Ive seen very few videos take this on and i think you and your camera crew could do a better job demonstrating it.

  9. Awesome video and videos great teacher from field experience and the tech side the class room pretty work, one thing that I would like to see is something on totally uncomfortable out of position and using a mirror to complete repair welds although it maybe something you really don’t want to show up and coming welders as just last week I installed a camera mount in the bottom of a 164 foot M/V not big deal outside welds were out in perfect position but the inside different story I went in and 1hour later two of my coworkers pulled me out by my feet, no atmosphere issues but closed off but keel plate, transverse stringers, fixed fuel, bilge, and hydraulic piping it was a bitch and have the cuts and bruises plus torn shirt to prove it. Just a thought Bob.

  10. I am looking for a good ac/dc welder. Preferably between 750-1500 cad. Would like a tig/stick. Hopefully with pulse. I work mostly on automotive. Tia

  11. Great tips Bob, totally agree with you about where to set the machine. Numbers don’t matter guys,if you like the heat , roll with it. Bob Moffat=Welding God

  12. Off topic question. What do you know/ think of a 338 rod? If you could make a video on these less known rods that would be great and maybe hard surface and nickel rods thanks.

  13. Happy New Year Bob! Another great video. Maybe sometime you could do a pipe video with a SA200 as your welder. Explain to everyone how the separate amp/volt controls can be manipulated to get the arc you want.

  14. I get guys who ask me all the time what amps I run on this pass or that pass with this size wire or that size etc etc… and no I don't think I'm some bad ass welder or clam to be one but it is a question I get asked on the job by the greener welders coming up and for me coming from working in plants wear you will most likely be several hundred feet, 3 floors up or down or in the middle of a pipe rack or in a man lift away from your machine and don't have the time to reset your machine because your ass will be run off for lack of production for taking to long to finish a weld. I tell them that I set my machine were I know that I can make a quality weld without ever needing to change the amps and no it wont be my best weld but it will pass CWI and XRAY. If I am in the position were I can set my machine on every pass then I will and that's usually when your on the ground and you can lay down the slickness. For example if your using a standard air cooled tig rig you can weld out a sch 80 carbon pipe at about 175 to 185 amps root to cap no problem in a perfect world I would do my root at about 180 amps, hot at 200 amps, fill at 260 amps and cap at about 230 amps but this ant a perfect world. P.S. I know this is a stick welding video but real pipe welding is done with GTAW process just saying.

  15. Thanks so much for this! I hear all these welders talking about a hot pass with no explanation of what they’re talking about. Also pointing towards center of the pipe.

  16. One video I would love to see is how to do 2G Pipe without a root an using 7018 3/32 sticks and just beads when the pipe is hanging off a arm and cannot be moved around fully, we are having to do such a thing like that in Pipe class an no one has a video on it at all!

  17. I very much appreciate the content you're providing. Can you do an episode showing lack of fusion and what to look for and some tips to avoid lack of fusion?

  18. Good vidios Bob. I will be buying a multi process welder for my shop. Whats the easiest welder to learn on and not have to upgrade as i get better? BestRegards Mike.

  19. Thanx bob this helps a ton I’m about to head into school for second year and have not touched rod!, so eny knowledge will help me.

  20. Bob for starters thank you very much for the free education. Id like to ask about the sentinel welding helmet and if you really like it and if thats the one that is supposed to ride close to your head on how it pivots. I apologize if you discussed it already in another video i just dont want to pull the trigger on the $$ without your input. Thanks again Sir

  21. Some unions don’t let you manipulate the puddle for testing in to the union. All you can do is drag the rod. If you could explain why that is or is there a reason why they do it? Figured that would be a good question for you.

  22. Preheating and coming back to the pool. If pool gets to hot, i get away briefly to give the pool time to cool enough to return to it and maintain the temperature of the pool

  23. I've been having a lot of fund welding with my everlast welders but now I'm wondering if I should be looking into a career in welding. I certainly love these videos.

  24. I've heard you should never wave a rod because of the slag. Is that more on spesific types of rods, or general BS?

  25. I've always described welding similar to playing with a garden water hose when one was a kid . works similar( water goes where you point your hose ,metal goes where you point your rod) and kind of simplifies what's happening . hahaha if you don't know what I mean time to go grab your hose and play with it . hahaha sorry can't help it Bob. You are right about heat setting ,every machine runs a little different .Going horizontal to gravity back and forth is what I do as well . I've noticed to, that once you have hit the edge of your bevel, and are starting back across a little ball of slag will roll over the top of your puddle (7018). That was an indication to me that no under cut was being left on the edge . bob you are a tradesmen and good vids

  26. I absolutely hate watching YouTube instructors, however, Bob is very modest, and i love the guy. Turn n burn buddy.

  27. Just wondering when you start on the bottom for a root or hot pass are you looking at the backside of the puddle to start .Doesn't seem like you guys are getting down low enough to see the back if you are. Or are you just looking at the front of the rod.
Another question I am partialy blind in my right eye would that affect my progress can you guys do a root with your right eye closed.

  28. Arc length adjustment !  What every welder should learn. Whether it is stick welding  or even more for TIG welding WITHOUT a foot peddle or thumb control.  Great advice Bob.

  29. Well said my friend, those numbers don’t mean much they’re just an estimation of what the machine should be at when it’s on that number ,although typically the faceplate says one thing and a volt/amp meter says another, welders just starting get all kind of confused when the WPS reads what amps they should be on and they’re thinking how can I get that amperage right on or lower 🤔

  30. As an cwi.
    40 years pipe welder.
If you are asking for repairs that's the way to hotpass .
I will look you out on a test for hot passing that way.
Terrible technique, you are not a good enough welder to train others, you should stop

  31. Went to welding school with Mike Tuttle, Damn GOOD welder. In the welding shop one day and Mike took on a challenge, he welded a 6" sch 40 pipe coupon root pass with a 3/32, 7018 and not only did it look Great, it passed the bend test with flying colors!!!

  32. “Someone wrote, I should run my hot pass on 111 amps or whatever. I laughed, I’ll run it on whatever I want” 😂 savage Bob

  33. Plz how do I make a decent cover pass on a 6G pipe using stick. I am just 3months old in my welding school but I do the root, hot and fill passes well. But I am having a problem make a good cap. Plz help

  34. Always had downhill welding on pipe to be proper. Why is there cases where pipeliners or just welders run downhill sometimes? When is it allowed, and when is it not?

  35. How are you liking the esab 205? Getting ready to purchase the esab or the mm220. Leaning towards the esab. I need you to give me that push

  36. I'm new to welding , can I weld the pipe in sections all the way to the surface or I must weld it in passes?
    Thanks

  37. You say run whatever amperage works, but wouldn't lower or higher amperage effect your penetration and overall strength of the weld? Which is something you can't see or change while welding?

  38. My instructors are pretty adamant about running stringers instead of weaving your fillers. Is this mandatory or just common practice they're trying to instill?
