Today we have invited the Korean traditional music master Living national treasure We brought her here. Last time you said the same thing! Thank you. A living national treasure wannabe… Korean traditional music aunt? What?! H: Traditional music aunt Sora! Ah seriously, why do you have to be like that? We were originally gonna invite her to a different video but you guys suggested the MMA BTS Idol Special Stage performance because it contains Korean traditional instruments They mentioned that it would be great if a pro in that field reacted to it. S: Oh, really? S: I’m really looking forward to it. It’s my first time seeing it. We wanted this video to be worth it so we caught her before she could go home. S: I really wanna go home! The video isn’t that long so I think we’ll get through it quickly S: Yes, I’m really looking forward to it. This video is also a first for me S: You can scoot over a bit more, Jaewoo It’s BTS’s IDOL, right? H: Yes it is! S: So it’s called IDOL? H: Yes. S: Oh, they’re drums! H: Wow it’s explosive! J: Look at the effects! S: So cool! S: Oh, something is opening. S: Ah, they’re Samgo Drums Samgo drums? S: Yes, you know how there are three drums these are dance drums J: Is that J-Hope? H: Is he playing the drums with his elbows? S: No, you don’t play with your elbows you use folding fans to express it H: Ah I mean J-Hope. It looks like he’s playing them with his elbows. S: Ah, sorry I was looking at the women. J: Wow, so cool S: It’s quite nerve-racking actually because you have to be completely in sync with the moves Oh! There are the folding fans! S: Did he just catch it? H: It’s magic! S: The folding fan he’s using… The white folding fans are not dance folding fans they’re basic ones, but they’ve expressed it nicely S: Mask dance J: It changes with every person S: They’re connecting it from fan to fan from salpuri to salpuri They’re showing each of the Korean dance elements S: It’s representative H: What could the next one be? H: This is like “The King and the Clown” All: Oh the lions! S: Oh the Taepyeongso is imitating the music and leads it very well Wow, so cool, they’re performing for a while! J: Woah, what’s that? S: This is called Nong-ak (Farmer’s music) It suits it really well. H: So cool J: What we’re hearing now is IDOL H: This is IDOL? J: You hear it, right? J: Woah, look at the entrance! It looks amazing A M A Z E D H: Even the background is an ink painting H: They changed the whole song to a traditional sound There really isn’t a better way to make Korea known! J: Exactly The clothes are traditional too? It seems to be mixed. J: It’s really cool H: I should dress like this too What? You can’t do that It’s only possible because they are BTS If I dress like that people will think I’m a historical person (?) *inaudible* I’ll stop there I didn’t even say anything yet you say such awful things. J: They’re incredible live. They’re great live even while dancing so powerfully. It looks like they’re riding a motorcycle (dance) Despite the powerful dance they sing so well I think that’s why they’re amazing. The traditional instruments in the background seem to be live J: Thought so too J: Woah, the stage is going up S: Oh the stage is really going up wow! J: I’m getting goosebumps Those who saw it live are so lucky Including these traditional instruments in Korean music nowadays is actually really difficult Usually, if they say they have included these traditional instruments it sounds as if they have put it all in separately Almost as if it was forced H: Or just using a hint of it J: Yeah, exactly basically forcing it and saying “it includes these traditional elements” You see that quite a lot, but here it almost seems as if it wasn’t BTS but people with a professional background in this field that are showing this side of Korea. It’s been molded together really well so it looks like a comprehensive art piece. And this feeling gave me goosebumps Also, they’re amazing at dancing H: Was it really a kind of song that fit so well with these traditional elements? J: Not sure, but the song itself has a Korean vibe to it, but it’s the first time I’ve seen it being interpreted in this kind of way. H: The fact that through this you can really show the world what Korean music is means that we don’t need a cultural mission to spread the word. This video alone S: The end! It would be plenty of advertisement already J: Also there is a certain direction that the Korean traditional music was steering toward it always stayed quite classical and didn’t make any bold turns but this took a completely different route altogether so they made something that all ages and genders can enjoy This is really great If there are any more songs with a similar style please let us know and we’ll react to it with our traditional music aunt S: Can’t you call me a girl instead of aunt S: I always want to be a young lady H: So as a pro in this field how was the entire performance in your eyes? S: Seeing how they went from folding fans to folding fans and salpuri to salpuri and then over to the masks and continuing with the traditional farmers dance. I think they strung it together really well. And I wouldn’t have imagined that it could connect so nicely. Honestly, I was a bit out of it so I couldn’t watch it properly. This was a mix of traditional dance and modern elements. Traditional music alone is seen as quite plain and boring so there are a lot of fusion pieces. For example, nowadays there are a lot of YouTubers that cover current songs with the Haegeum or Gayageum. Despite this, it’s actually very difficult to make traditional music appealing. People have the prejudice that it’s boring. But it seems that this video completely wiped out those prejudices. J: I think now traditional music can be approached more easily through this video. S: It was really fun and refreshing and also quite surprising. I didn’t know it could be this fun. The performance really makes you question that it was ever boring. Their appearance overall was really awesome When they entered it really felt like they were representing us as a group S: It was truly amazing. H: Isn’t the MMA hosted overseas? J: MMA? J: I’m not sure. H: The MMA I’m thinking of is martial arts. J: Same! That’s all I can think of. J: I thought they abbreviated MAMA and made it MMA. H: I think it would be a bit odd to further shorten MAMA Anyways, thank you so much for suggesting this video S: the best! Next time, if there are more great videos like this we will watch them together and share our thoughts and feelings. Bye guys!
